Wystawa Pamięć koncentruje się na wyborze prac z trzech cykli fotograficznych Jessiki Backhaus. One day in November z 2008 roku to hommage dla słynnej niemiecko-francuskiej fotografki Gisèle Freund, z którą przez wiele lat łączyła ją niezwykła przyjaźń i która była jej mentorką. Cykl Once, Still and Forever z 2012 roku to projekt analizujący temat czasu. Backhaus, w obliczu kolejnej przeprowadzki i powrotu po długiej przerwie do ojczyzny, konfrontuje emocje związane z przeszłością, teraźniejszością i przyszłością. Najnowsza seria zatytułowana Six Degrees of Freedom z 2016 roku jest równie osobistym poszukiwaniem korzeni rodzinnych. Artystka odwiedza miejsca związane ze swoim dzieciństwem oraz młodością, by poprzez zdjęcia przyjrzeć się swoim wspomnieniom o nich. Wędrówka śladami zapamiętanych miejsc i ludzi, którzy odeszli, jest odkrywaniem własnej tożsamości.
Jessica Backhaus (ur. 1970) ‒ w wieku 16 lat wyjechała z Niemiec do Paryża, by studiować fotografię oraz komunikację wizualną. Lata 1995‒2009 spędziła w Nowym Jorku, gdzie asystowała fotografom oraz realizowała własne projekty. Obecnie mieszka i pracuje w Berlinie. Backhaus inspiruje się ludźmi oraz pięknem zwyczajnych przedmiotów oraz ulotnych chwil. Jej twórczość, często inspirowana własnymi doświadczeniami, dotyka takich tematów, jak pamięć, tożsamość czy czas.
Memory focuses on a selection of works from three photographic series by Jessica Backhaus. The 2008 “One day in November” pays homage to the renowned German-French photographer Gisèle Freund, Jessica’s mentor and a dear friend of many years. The series “Once, Still and Forever” of 2012 is a project in which time becomes the object for analysis. Backhaus, about to move once again, this time returning to her homeland after many years abroad, confronts the emotions associated with the past, the present and the future. The most recent series, entitled „Six Degrees of Freedom” from 2016 is an equally personal journey in search of family roots. The artist revisits places she knew as a child and teenager to take a look at her memories of them through photographs. Wandering to find traces of places she remembers and people who are now gone, she sets out on a journey of discovery of her own identity.
Jessica Backhaus (born 1970), left Germany for Paris at the age of 16, to study photography and visual communication. Then, from 1995 to 2009, Jessica lived in New York, working as an assistant to a number of photographers and pursuing her own projects. Currently the artist lives and works in Berlin. Backhaus finds her inspiration in people, in the beauty of mundane objects and elusive moments. Her work , often deriving from personal experience, delves into such issues as memory, identity, or time.
